known 6th October 1917

FORMERLY IN THE ARMY FOR SEVEN YEARS News has been received of the death in action of Gunner Thomas Henry Harlow, aged 45 years, whose wife and 5 children reside at 63, Bloemfontein Street, Cudworth. The deceased enlisted in the Durham R.G.A. in January, 1915, at which time he worked at Grimethorpe Colliery, but he had previously been in the R.F.A. for seven years. Captain Boulton has written to Mrs. Harlow: "It is with the deepest regret that I have to write to inform you that your husband was killed in action this morning (September 9th). A shell burst near him and he was killed instantaneously, suffering no pain. He was buried in a Military Cemetery and I shall see that a cross is erected as soon as possible. I was at the service, as well as his sergeant and number of comrades. All the officers and men of this Battery join in expressing their deepest sympathy with you in your sorrow." Chaplain G. S. Hanbury wrote: "My dear Mrs. Harlow, - You will already have heard from the officers of your husband's Battery of his death in action on Sunday morning. I should not venture to trespass upon your grief were it not for the fact that I had the sad privilege of laying his body to rest at 12.30p.m. in a large cemetery near here. I can scarcely hope that any words of mine can help to lighten your grief, but please accept my deepest sympathy. I do pray that God may give you strength to bear your sorrow bravely. Though you will not see his dear face again I am sure he is not far away, and we may all hope, if God so wills, to meet those we love again when we see Him face to face. You can indeed feel proud of him. Our gunners are doing splendid work under hard conditions. At any rate he is far away from the sound of the guns and the shells and all the horrors of war. May he rest in peace, and may God bless you and yours."
