Another Barnsley Lad Falls in Battle

known 20th October 1917

News has been received of the death in action of Pte. Harry Raymond Allden, West Yorks Regt., at the age of 19 years. He was the youngest son of Mrs. Elizabeth Allden and the late Mr. Edward Allden, of 9, Shaw Lane, Barnsley, and prior to joining the colours he was engaged at the Barnsley National Shell Factory. The first intimation of the deceased being in action came from his friend, Robert Martin, also of Barnsley, who is in hospital. Later the following letter was received from Second-Lieut. A.H. Rutledge: - "Dear Mrs. Alden, - I regret to inform you of the death of your son in this recent fight. He belonged to my platoon and was respected throughout the Company. The reason why I have not written sooner than this is because we have been in the trenches since the 20th Sept. I hope you are bearing this great loss as well as can be expected. With this I send you my deepest sympathy and all the men's too." The deceased soldier was educated at St. Mary's Schools, and was formerly a chorister at the Parish Church. --------------------------------------------- ALLDEN - Killed in action September 20th, 1917.
