The Following is a statement from Tovani, in relation to a Board of Enquiry for a fatal Mortar Training Accident on the above date. 2nd Lieutenant W.R. Tovani, 7th Black Watch - "At the Second Army Grenade and Stokes Mortar School on September 23rd, I was on parade with the Stokes Mortar Wing about 12:15pm. I was acting left sub-section leader which was on the left of the mortar which exploded. I heard L/Sgt Parsons who was number 1 of the Mortar in question, call the order, 'Fuse', '13 seconds', 'Long Range Cartridge'. This is the red cartridge'. I saw number 2 load the mortar and a premature explosion occurred which destroyed the mortar, and wounded several persons. The force of the explosion knocked me onto my knees but did not injure me"
