Lives of the First World War

The following is a statement in relation to a Board of Enquiry about a fatal mortar training exercise in France. - Fifth Witness - 2nd Lieutenant E.S.Porter, 12th King's Liverpool Regiment - States:- "At the Grenade and Stokes Mortar School, Second Army, on 23rd September at 10:45am I inspected 36 Stokes Bombs (Dummies) which had been put out ready for issue. I looked at each one most carefully and can certify that they were all in good order. No Stokes bomb is ever issued from the store unless it has been previously inspected by me."
