Mortar Accident - James Knapp

Mortar Accident - James Knapp

The following statement from Knapp was in relation to a Board of Enquiry into a Fatal Mortar Training Accident on the above date:- 'Sixth Witness, Number 14872 Driver, Knapp, Royal Garrison Artillery states - "I am the storeman at the Second Army Grenadge and Stokes Mortar School and am in charge of all the shells and mortars. On Saturday 23rd of September I placed 36 Stokes Mortar Shells outside about 10:30am all ready for use, I examined each shell carefully before placing them outside the store. I often find it neccessary to unscrew the container in order to extract the cartridge, especially in wet weather. Directly I have cleaned the container I invariably replace it at once and lay the shells aside."
