Born in Havant in 1885. According to the 1901 Havant census he was a domestic gardener aged 15. 1911 census he was a house painter aged 25 and eldest son of Elizabeth Jane and Edward Carter, a painter and glazier, of 3 Sultan Terrace, Lymbourne, Havant. In 1913 he married Sarah Kate, daughter of Thomas Pullen who was an ale and stout bottler. The Pullens lived at 70 West Street next to the Cobden Arms Public House. Alfred and Sarah had two children , Plyllis born 1914 and Thomas born 1916. Alfred was shot during October 1914 just weeks before the end of the war. He was left for dead for many days and suffered the horrors of being gassed where he lay. Due to his injuries he died in France in hospital on Christmas Eve 1914, he never came home. His daughter (my mother) was four years old at the time and never really enjoyed Christmas from then on.
