Lives of the First World War

Fred Phipps's parents William and Esther Phipps left the Forest of Dean when the coal mines were worked out and went with their young family to Castleford. Their son Fred married Frances and they lived in Saltburn Street, Hull. Sadly Frances died during a flu epidemic leaving two children, Esther and Bill (known as little Bill or Tat). Their father Fred died in 1917 and Esther went to live with Fred's sister Alice and Tat went to live with Fred's brother William. They were very much loved within the Phipps family.
