Claud was piloting a 57 Sqn DH4 D8398 with 2/Lt Leslie Harvey Eyres as his observer when he was shot down, probably by AA fire, over France, 27th Sep 1918. Both officers were taken PoW, Claud was wounded and died of his wounds 7th Nov. Stokes was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 1 January 1919, and received a mention in dispatches for "valuable services rendered during the War" on 3 June 1919
