Walter served for nearly 21 years in the Royal Artillery. He had 2 tours of India, totally nearly 12 years; one in South Africa of 2 years; and 7 years at home. Whilst in South Africa he was awarded the Queen's South Medal 1899 with clasps: Cape Colony, Defence of Ladysmith, Laing's Nek; and King's Medal 1901 with clasps Transvaal and Orange Free State.
