Private, 24347, King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment, 8th Battn. Killed in action on 23/03/18, Aged 35 No known grave, but named in the Memorial Chapel at St Annes Parish Church, on the memorial in Ashton Gardens and on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, Bay 2. Commemorated on grave N12N at St Annes Parish Church: In ever loving memory of John HEYWORTH died 11th December 1915. Also Agnes Ann wife of the above died 19th February 1924 aged 64. Also Charles HEYWORTH son of the above killed in action in France 23rd March 1918 aged 35. Also Wilbert Norman HEYWORTH died in St Germain 8th January 1919 aged 29. Peace perfect peace Charles was the son of the late John and Agnes Heyworth. In 1901 Charles was at 113 Church Rd with his parents and brothers Henry, Wilbert and Tom. Wilbert was also killed in the war. The St Annes Parish Church Burial Register places his parents at 41, St Andrews Rd South (1915 and 1924). Charles was married to Margaret and in 1911, aged 25, he was living at 34 Church Rd, St Annes with two daughters. He was a bricklayer at Rushworth’s, St. Annes. The couple had two further children. He was a native of St. Annes and was educated at Heyhouses School. Charles enlisted in 1916 and was wounded in October 1917. The St. Annes Express reports that he was in Broadwater Hospital Ipswich “after being wounded in the push at Ypres. Pte Heyworth says he was shot through the right arm and his left side, and especially his left leg, is badly bruised, through being blown up twice. He is going on very well....He went out to France at the end of December and has been through four or five battles.” Following his recovery he returned to France and was killed in 1918.
