Sapper, 140460, Royal Engineers, 90th Field Company. Born Accrington, residence St Annes, enlisted Blackpool. Killed in action on 25/04/18, aged 37 No known grave, but named in the Memorial Chapel at St Annes Parish Church, on a grave in the churchyard, in Ashton Gardens, and on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres, Belgium, Panel 8 and 162. Commemorated on grave EE87E at St Annes Parish Church: In memoriam. Herbert PICKUP killed in action April 25th 1918 aged 37. Also Mary Alice beloved wife of the above died February 15th 1951 in her 71st year. Also Heather Bell WILSDON died March 2nd 1916 aged 1. Gladys M PICKUP died February 18th 1909 aged 18 months. Doris PICKUP died February 5th 1913 aged 2. Herbert was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs George Pickup of 19 St Patricks Rd South. In 1901 the family with five children were living on Kilnhouse Lane, the father identified as an Architect and Herbert identified as a joiner. By 1911 Herbert had got married and was living with his wife, Mary their two children plus two boarders, at 9 Springfield Rd, St Annes. At the time of his death the St Annes Express reports that Herbert left a widow with one son. It is possible that one of his children died in infancy. At some stage Herbert went to Australia but he returned home and enlisted two and a half years prior to his death. He had been in France about eighteen months before being killed.
