known 1st January 1880
Private 201789 (formerly 5497), King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment, 1st/4th Battn. Born Marton, enlisted St Annes. Killed in action on 31/07/1917. No known grave, but named in the Memorial Chapel at St Annes Parish Church, on the memorial in Ashton Gardens and on the Menin Gate Panel 120. Henry (bn 1890Q1) was the eldest son of Margaret Cross, who later (1891Q1) married John Slater, a farm labourer living in Marton. Henry took the surname Slater and John and Margaret had five more children. In 1901 the family were living on Peel Rd, Ballam. By 1911 Henry was working as an Agricultural Labourer on the farm of Richard Whiteside in Ballam. According to his Service Record (filed under the name Slater) and confirmed by GRO Indexes Henry married Jane Pollard at St. Annes Parish Church in 1916Q3 and the couple lived at Council Cottages in St. Annes. They had two children, James Pollard born 1912Q4 and John Cross born 1916Q4. Henry’s Attestation Papers are badly decayed and have numerous crossings out with the primary name being Slater but also showing the name Cross. The initial attestation is dated 1915 (month illegible), but the countersignature of the approving officer is not dated until 19th September 1916. Henry is shown as a cowman and both Headroomgate and Kilnhouse Farrms appear as addresses in addition to Council Cottages. Very shortly after the marriage and birth of the second child Henry was sent to France on 3rd January 1917. By 1922 when she acknowledges receipt of Henry’s medals Jane had remarried and was called Webster. Legally speaking Henry’s name was Cross as that was on his birth certificate and also the name used for his marriage certificate and the surname of his second (and legitimate) son, John.
