The procession also included Territorials and a number of soldiers of the North Staffordshire Regiment on furlough, members and band of the Silverdale Church Lads Brigade under Bandmaster R Herod, and officials of the Midland Coal, Coke and Iron Company Limited, Apedale where the deceased was employed prior to enlisting. The coffin was drawn on a lorry and enveloped in a Union Jack and there were numerous floral tributes. The band played appropriate music along the route, which was thronged with people, the scene being most impressive. The service in the church and at the graveside was conducted by the Vicar of Chesterton (Rev. J. H. George), assisted by the Rev. F.B. Matthews, curate. The buglers sounded "The Last Post".
