Unhappy family story

Unhappy family story

1884 - 1907

James Bullett (1862-1945) married Susannah Osborne in 1884 in Hessett , Suffolk. They have Maud Mary Bullett in 1884 (baptised in Hessett too), Joseph Arthur Bullett in 1888 in Hessett (no baptism). From then on it seems that James Bullett was living and working away 'in the Shires'. During that time, Susannah Bullett nee Osborne moved to Bradfield St George, nearby, and has more children who have their GRO birth registration as if Susannah is a single woman : Thomas George Bullett in 1892, Dulcie Florence May Bullett in 1895 and Basil Rowland Bullett in 1899. There are no baptisms found for them. In 1898, while being a single parent at home, the youngest child Dulcie, aged 2, gets scalded with boiling water from the fire and dies. There is an inquest and the verdict is accidental death. This is when Susannah mentions that her husband James is living in the Shires. See newspaper cutting from 1898. By 1902 Susannah remarries to Spencer Allan Firman. In 1903 James Bullett remarries Ellen Searston in Derbyshire. It is not clear if they have divorced or are bigamous marriages. Susannah and Spencer Firman seem to move around a lot and have at least three more children.
