Sydney was over 21 but his brother was underage and should not have been allowed to leave England. Other evidence provides a photo and other details " Son of Mr. Christopher Washington and Mrs. Alberta Maggs Stumbles, of Balfour, Cape Province. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. Attended St Andrew's College for one year only - from January to December 1912. Boarder in Armstrong House. Played in the Armstrong House 1st XI during the inter-house cricket matches. Confirmed in June 1912. Won a prize for Maths. Fought in Delville Wood in July 1916. His brother also died in service. Commemoration stone in Balfour Main Cemetery, Eastern Cape" Shared with thanks.
