Brothers at War

Three of the Stewart brothers from 9 Brander Street, Lossiemouth, Morayshire were to be killed in action during the Great War. ALEXANDER was in the Collingwood Battalion of the Royal Naval Division and was captured on 9th October 1914. He died of pneumonia on 23 October 1918 and is buried at Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Brandenburg, Germany. JOHN was in the Royal Naval Reserve and was a Second Hand aboard the Buckie Registered Drifter, H.M.D. 'Clavis', which was a net vessel and attacked and sunk by an Austrian Cruiser on the 9 July 1916 off Brindisi, Italy where he was buried. He was later exhumed in 1981 and moved to Bari War Cemetery, Italy. JOSEPH was a Lance-Corporal in the 6th Seaforth Highlanders, he was killed in action on 31 July 1917. His body was either never found or was unidentified and he is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
