Bernard's father Hugh was born in Selsey. Bernard and his siblings were all born and baptised in Birdham. The 1881 census recorded Bernard with his parents at Bachmere Farm, Birdham. By the time of the 1891 Census, the family had moved to Norton, and the 1901 census recorded them at Coles Farm, Norton. By 1911, Bernard was working away in Huntingdon. He is commemorated on the war memorial outside St Peter's Church in Selsey, and also on a plaque inside the church.
