"HINCHLIFFE MILL LADS ‘DONE' Readers will particularly sympathise with a Hinchliffe Mill family. Within a post or two of each other came letters that two brothers - Arthur and George Willie Dawson – had made the supreme sacrifice. They were both single young fellows who were doing their bit for their country, with the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment. George Willie, it would appear, was killed on July 1st, and Arthur succumbed on the 6th. Thus they were called away within five days. Arthur, who was 26 years of age, was a tailor by vocation, and worked for his brother. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of hostilities. George Willie was 23 years of age and a weaver. He was formerly engaged by Messrs Whitely and Green. Both were connected to Hinchliffe Mill Liberal Club and were also deeply interested in the Holme Bridge F.C. It is believed they met their death in the same engagement as Sgt. Moodycliffe and Lance-Corpl. Hobson. Quiet, unassuming decent young fellows they were highly respected throughout the district’" (9165 Sgt Hubert Moodycliffe is commemorated in the Upperthong Community; 14235 L/Cpl Hubert Hobson is commemorated in the Netherthong Community)
