Edgar Barber was born in Austonley, West Yorkshire on 24 September 1886, the son of George and Ruth Barber. He was baptised on 3 April 1887 at St. David's Church, Holmbridge. He attended St David's Parish Church, Holmbridge and was employed as a shoemaker ‘Clogger’ by Mr John Wagstaffe of Holmfirth. On the 1911 census he is living with his widowed mother and two sisters at Carr Green, Flush House. He is 24 years old and working as a ‘Clogger’. He enlisted in December 1915 and embarked for France in August 1916. He was reported missing, presumed killed after an attack on the Schwaben Redoubt on 3 September 1916. He was 29 years old. As with many soldiers reported missing, it was not until several months later that his parents were informed that he was now presumed killed. However, his body was found and identified later and he is buried in Mill Road Cemetery, grave location Plot 1, Row I, Grave 9.
