2nd Lieutenant Martin Spencer- Smith and his brother Captain Charles Owen Spencer-Smith, both were killed in WW1. Their brother Rev. Arnold Patrick Spencer-Smith died in Antarctica 9 Mar 1916 during the Shackleton expedition. Four of their cousins, Trooper 2356 Archdall Owen Gaze, Lieutenant 1898 William Owen Gaze, Lieutenant 230 Frederick Owen Gaze M.C. and Bar, all served in the Australian Imperial Forces. A 4th cousin, Private 16408 Thomas Owen Gaze also enlisted but shortly there after was discharged due to a prior disability.
