Digging a little deeper into the records re Embden Street Hulme.

1911 - 1918

Edith in common with many girls left school at 14, in her case she stated that it was Rycroft Street School in Gloucester. According to the references she gave she went to live some distance away with Mrs Annie Powell nee Cole at 165 Embden Street Hulme Manchester. Edith remained at this address until she applied to work in the W.A.A.C. The 1911 UK census shows Edith living on Embden Street and she was probably helping to look after 9 month old Wilfred Powell. A quick search did not reveal any more children born to Mr and Mrs Powell. By the time Edith applied to work in the W.A.A.C. she was likely also aware of the families on Embden Street left to grieve the death of a family member. At least 4 young men are listed at https://www.themanchesters.org/Manchester%20casualties%201914%201916.html
