Bernard's Employment with Barclays Bank

Bernard's Employment with Barclays Bank

B H Penfold appears on the Barclays roll of honour published in January 1919. The entry gives his rank as 2nd Lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters, and his Barclays branch as St. Neots. The main board minute books record deaths of staff members on active service, and the minute for 8th November 1917 records him as having been killed in action on 21st October, and confirms his rank and unit as in the roll of honour. Oddly, he is not listed in the register of staff on active service, compiled in 1917 - perhaps his death came a little too soon for this record; nor in the Cambridge Local Head Office register of salaries (St. Neot’s was in the Cambridge District), though this only dates from 1916 onwards. Unfortunately there are no staff records for either St. Neots branch or Cambridge District pre-1916, and there are no other further sources of information for his career. Presumably he was a clerk, probably fairly senior by the age of 34 in 1914, though not yet at the level of chief clerk.
