Two Silver War Badges

Two Silver War Badges

Gunner Packer was a regular soldier who originally enlisted in the Wiltshire Regiment in 1908. He transferred to the Artillery in 1910. On 26 August 1914 he was wounded in the leg while serving in France, a gunshot wound to the calf. The following year, on 4 August 1915, he was discharged as unfit, partly because of the wound and partly because of tuberculosis in his chest. This was recognised by the award of a Silver War Badge but, before he had received it, he had decided to re-enlist. Gunner Packer served in the Artillery from January to December 1917, before again being discharged as unfit because of TB of the lungs. This time, his Silver War Badge was issued only one day after his service had ended, on 5 December 1917.
