July 17th 1916: A letter to Mrs Castell says that Herbert Castell was wounded after the Somerset Light infantry had been through five days’ awful bombardment, and were making a gas attack on the German trenches. “Poor Bert was wounded in the chest by a piece of shrapnel, but we all thought he would get over it as he seemed so cheerful and wished us the best of luck, as he was being carried out…. A braver and more fearless fellow never wore khaki…”
