The 2nd Battalion, QVR, landed in France in early 1917, having spent the previous years training and stationed in the UK. Drawn into the 3rd Ypres offensive, the battalion went into action just outside of St Julien on the 26th September in a failed attack on German positions. In poor visibility and with no visible landmarks, the battalion suffered heavy casualties.
