Royal Navy 'Deserter'

Royal Navy 'Deserter'

known 1915

When war broke out he was still legally in the Royal Naval Division but he decided to enlist in the army on 15th September 1915, signing up as ‘John Onslow,’ in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Wrexham. He gave his correct address as 17 Hawthorne Grove, Seaforth. It took only forty nine days for the Royal Navy to catch up with him. His Naval records show he served from 27th October 1914 on the ‘Empress of India,’ and then on ‘Victory,’ but he effectively deserted when he joined the Army. The Navy put out a certificate for his recall, but relented and he was allowed to leave the Navy and he enlisted in the Liverpool Scottish on December on 7th December 1915.
