3rd June 1916 - 4th June 1916
On pages 162 to 175 of Barnsley Pals Jon Cooksey describes the training and plans for a trench raid by a large group of the 14th York and Lancasters. Henry Clare is listed on the nominal roll of this group on p.168 of the book. The raid does not go to plan, the majority of the men cannot get through the wire into the German trenches. Henry's photo appears on p.175 where it notes that his body is brought in from No-Man's-Land, probably killed by shrapnel from British shells which fall short.
