Express & Advertiser 2nd September 1916 ACCOUNTANCY CLERK KILLED IN THE R.A.M.C. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Heap of Woodside, Towneley, received the distressing news on Thursday that their only child, Pte. Reuben Heap, of the Royal Army Medical Corps, was killed in action of the 18th of August. The official letter from the War Office contains no further details. Mr. Joseph Heap is well-known as a director of the Burnley Building Society, and as a leading member of the Enon Baptist Church. His on Reuben was educated at Silcoates School, near Wakefield, and on leaving there entered the office of Messrs. Proctor and Proctor, chartered accountants. He passed the preliminary examination of the Incorporated Society of Chartered Accountants last summer, and soon after learning of this success he enlisted last October in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was first in training at Aldershot, and then at Netley Hospital for six months. Afterwards he was in camp on Salisbury Plain, and had a few days at home last June. That proved to be his last furlough. He arrived in France on the 7th August, and had only been a fortnight at the front when he was killed. He was only 19 when he enlisted, celebrating his 20th birthday last November. He was well-known and highly esteemed as accountancy clerk at the office of Messrs. Proctor and Proctor, with whom he would in due course have been articled. Shortly before joining the colours he had become a teacher at Enon Sunday School.
