Description British Memorial Plaque Issued For 241494 Pte. Arnold Sewell, Of The Duke Of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). Lot includes Memorial Plaque, photocopy of medal index card, CWGC "certificate", 1911 census and war diary pages. The name is unique on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database. Mr Sewell served with the 2nd Battalion of the West Riding Regiment. He was killed (missing presumed dead) on the 31/08/1918 and is remembered on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial. Before the war he lived at 10 Brunswick Yard, Lockwood, Huddersfield with his family. He worked as a "woolen piercer" and was 21 in 1918. The battalion was in action near Haucourt on the 31st of August 1918. The battalion war diary states; "a small attack without barrage to capture the copse was unsuccessful during the afternoon. But at dusk the men in splendid form carried everything before them and captured the copse and final objective... 45 prisoners and 2 officers were taken... 74 O.R killed, 36 O.R wounded, 17 O.R missing and 21 O.R to hospital. In the operation the Bn. also took 9 enemy machine guns and one enemy field gun." Memorial Plaques were issued for all ranks of men and women serving in (or under contract with) the British & Imperial (ie: Indian, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand etc) Forces, including those employed in hospitals or the Merchant Navy etc, whose death was attributable to the war. Just over 1.36 million Memorial Plaques were issued.
