August 1916 - February 1919
Although Cyril tried to enlist as early as 1914 he was not accepted until August 1916. At that time he was put in charge of the stationary search lights used over London as part of the defence against German Zeppelin attacks. In March 1918 he was sent to France , and worked in a similar capacity with ant-aircraft batteries. He was on a short of leave of absence in England in January 1919 when he became ill with 'flu'. His condition worsened and he died in February 1919.
