Ernest Heyworth

Ernest Heyworth born 28 May 1898 in Littleborough, Lancashire, son of Barker and Maria Heyworth. In 1911 the family lived at 12 Green Vale, Littleborough with a 12 year old Ernest being a cotton doffer and part time scholar. Prior to enlisting at Rochdale at the age of 16, Ernest was employed at Messrs Fothergill and Harvey's Rock Nook Mill. Private Ernest Heyworth, Service number 15613 of the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment died 1 July 1916 aged 18 years old in the Battle of the Somme at Orvillers Spur and Mash Valley. He has no known grave. He is commemorated at Thiepval Memorial in France (Cemetery/memorial reference: Pier and Face 1 C) and on the Cenotaph in Littleborough. His death was formally notified to his family on 3 May 1917.
