Herbert was born in Hawthorn, Australia 24/4/1898 and was formerly in the Australian Imperial Force, service no. 10853. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps once in England. On a test flight in a Hyderabad 17 from 3 Aircraft Depot on 18/10/1918, he landed at 2 Aircraft Depot, USAS Latrecy, Flanders to get directions. On taking off again from a muddy field, his engine failed to pick up, a wing struck a bush and the aircraft crashed. Herbert was badly burned and died three days later, 21/10/1918.
