He was educated at Uppingham and was an undergraduate at Clare when war broke out. He won his school colours for Rugby football, and at Cambridge obtained the college colours for cricket, rugby and hockey. He received his commission through the University, and in September, 1914, was posted to the rifle Brigade. In February he was made lieutenant and was given his company in August last, and was gazetted Captain on 7 October. His Colonel writes; ‘He did splendidly and carried two lines of German trenches. It was while consolidating the position won that he was badly wounded by a bomb and from the first there was no hope for him.’
