George Price Driver Army Service Corps DM2/164787 Died: 03-05-1917 We know little about George Price, who was received into the Catholic Church at St Werburgh’s on 24 April 1916 age 20. His parents are not named on his conditional baptism entry, nor are his army records available. Therefore we can only guess which Chester family he belonged to. The most likely family seems to be that of Thomas and Mary Price, who lived at 46 Granville Road, in 1911. Thomas was a joiner. Their family consisted of Emma, Ivy, George (age 16), Harold, Doris and Gladys. George attested with the Signal Company of the Royal Engineers but later transferred to the Army Service Corps. His enlistment papers have not survived so we know little of his army career. George died in May 1917, probably during the Arras Offensive of April-May of that year. Some time after this date, Fr Maurice Hayes wrote R.I.P. against his conditional baptism entry. He was entitled to receive the British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal. George’s name is on the Arras Memorial, Bay 10.
