Sub-Lieutenant Hugh Townley Jarvis, R.N.R., who lost his life in H.M. Mercantile Cruiser Calgarian, on March 1, aged 28, was the fifth son of the late Lewis Page Jarvis and Mrs. Jarvis, of Bedford. He was educated at Bedford School, and was being trained for the engineering profession when war broke out, and had just been appointed as engineer-lieutenant in the Allan Liner Calgarian, which was taken over by the Government as an auxiliary cruiser. He was on duty when she was struck by a torpedo in the engine room and sunk. Mrs. Lewis Jarvis has had six sons serving and two daughters nursing during the war, while her other son served throughout the South African war. Her youngest son was killed at the first battle of Ypres. Two others have been wounded and two have won the Military Cross reproduced from The Times and by permission of Bedford School.
