Official news is to hand of the death in action on April 14th, of Lieut W E Atkinson, Tank Battalion, of Southport. He enlisted in December 1915, and gained rapid promotion, being promoted to Sergeant in August 1916, while his commission was gained in July 1917. By profession he was a teacher, and was educated at Christ Church School, Southport, and the Technical School, Wigan. He commenced teaching at Holy Trinity Southport, and in August 1914 obtained an appointment under the Retford Education Authority. For many years he was a member of the Tabernacle Cricket an Football Clubs, and was also a member of the church and choir, and Sunday school. The deceased officer was officially identified with the Sunday School Union, District Christian Endeavour Union, and a member of the local Y.M.C.A.
