There is no information as to the family of Bert Whales, however, the record card held by the South African War Graves Project states: Son of "Mrs. S. A. Whales, of 52 Gipsy Hill, Norwood, London." There is a census record for 1901 that may provide a clue. Sarah Ann Whales Head Married Female 51 1850 London, England Bert Whales Adopted Son Single Male 22 1879 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Sign Writer I could not find any other definite census record for Bert that could show his parents and birth information.
