Obituary of Thomas George Peyton Winmill

Captain Thomas George Peyton Winmill, R.H.A., killed in action on June 10th, 1918, aged 20 years, was the youngest and only surviving son of the late George Winmill, and of Mrs. Winmill, Bedford, He was educated at Bedford School (1907- 1914), passing straight into Woolwich, in June, 1915, he was gazetted to the R.F.A. He went to France in August, 1916, and got his " Jacket " September, 1917. His Colonel writes : " All of us will miss him badly. I knew him well, and feel that in losing him we have lost much. He had been invaluable to me on several occasions, and I knew how thoroughly and implicitly I could rely on him. In many ways his opinions and judgment on military matters were those of a very much older and more experienced man. He fell doing his duty, and all of us feel that we have lost one whom it will be hard to replace." His Major writes: "The loss to us is very heavy ... he was a very promising officer, but I know he does not grudge his life to England." His brother officer writes : '* I have known him since he joined the Brigade, and I know that the other Batteries feel his loss almost as keenly as we do. He was a most extra- ordinarily gallant and efficient officer, as anyone who has seen him in action will know, and I know that the men feel his loss very deeply, I cannot tell you how great the loss is to us."
