HM Australian Submarine AE2 was commissioned in Barrow in 1914 with a crew formed from both RAN and loaned RN personnel. She then undertook the voyage to Sydney in company with AE1: at that time the longest journey ever made by a submarine. When the German naval threat in the Pacific diminished, AE2 was deployed to the Mediterranean. Following on from the failure of the E15 mission, AE2 was the first submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles. After 5 days of creating havoc in the Sea of Marmora, AE2 suffered a control failure which led to her surfacing near hostile forces and being attacked and holed. Unable to continue operating, the boat was scuttled. The crew all escaped and were interned as POWs. Four subsequent died in captivity. This community includes all those who served in AE2 from first commissioning until her loss. Further details of AE2 including crew biographies are at: http://ae2.org.au/
