Metropolitan Police WW1 Roll of Honour

Metropolitan Police WW1 Roll of Honour

In the nave of Westminster Abbey is a Roll of Honour book for members of the Metropolitan Police who died in the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars. During WW1, more than 4,000 officers were either re-called or volunteered for the military during the conflict, while the remaining 18,000 served as London’s first line in defence. Some 360 officers were killed in action while 337 medals, including The Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.), the Military Cross (M.C.) and the Distinguished Conduct Medal (D.C.M) were awarded to Met officers for their gallantry. Officers’ families suffered financial hardship as military pay was less than police pay, and many widows of officers killed in action and their children were left in poverty. Colleagues still working in London agreed to a hardship fund to support them. A memorial service for the officers and constables who died in the Great War was held in Westminster Abbey on 17 May 1919 and the service paper includes all the names. That list, in conjunction with Registers of Leavers from the Metropolitan Police (held in series MEPO 4 at the National Archives), is used as the source for this community, which remembers the members of the Metropolitan Police who lost their lives during WW1 either whilst serving in the Forces or as a result of enemy action at home.
