The Gibson / Guy family: brothers-in-law

Joseph Gibson from Barbados, West Indies married Florence Ann, the sister of George Theophilus Guy. Their father was a seaman from Jamaica who had settled in Liverpool and the family's story was told as part of an exhibit at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The exhibition (Sept 2017-Dec 2018) is based on the book 'Black Salt: Seafarers of African Descent on British Ships' by historian Ray Costello. Joseph served with the Royal Army Medical Corps and rejoined the Merchant Navy (Mercantile Marine) after the war. Sadly George accidentally drowned in the final days of the war and is commemorated on the Basra memorial in Iraq.
