Cecil George Aubin born in Uckfield, Joined army for WW1 on 16 August 1914, he joined the Royal Sussex Regiment.

This is possibly my great-grandfather on the far left. Not sure when taken. He was part of the Royal Sussex regiment. Not sure where this is taken.

Cecil was 27 years and 3 months old when he signed up.

Cecil was 5ft 11.5 in tall. He was signed up in Hastings. It seems to the 5th Cinque Port of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

WW1 papers possibly to do with de-mob in 1919

From Crowborough in Sussex, he joined the Royal Sussex Regiment on 16 August 1914 and lasted the entire length of the war. However he saw horrors on the battlefield, was gassed and the experience affected the whole of his life.

Papers from the end of WW1, it shows that at some point Cecil was in Italy.

This document is Cecil signing up to the army. Its possibly either just before WW1 or at the very beginning of WW1. His number is noted as 2221 in the 5th Cinque Port Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. His military number changed later on to 240424.

The conduct sheet for Cecil Aubin, on 19 Dec 1917 he was found guilty of being absent from parade and on 20 July 2018 he was found drunk on service. He was punished. We now know as a family that the horrors he experienced and saw throughout the war had a terrible effect on him. We totally understand why he struggled and unfortunately was punished. It was a different time.

He is noted as 2221 on 18 May 1916 he was attached to the 8th Signal Corps. 18 June 1916 he was noted as absent on parade. On 24 Sept 1916 and 5 Nov 1916 he noted as being in hospital. On 3 Nov 1916 he is noted as being on hospital with rheumatism, and on 6 Nov 1916 he is noted as being in hospital with myalgia and is transferred to the larger hospital at Etaples. 17 June 1917 he is in hospital with boils. 20 July 1917 he is gassed. This gas affected his health for the rest of his life.

After being hospitalised with gas he spent the rest of July 1917 in hospital. He is then noted as being in the Etaples hospital on 5 Sept 1917 and 18 Oct 1917. 23 Oct 1917 he was absent from parade. He is then transferred to the Italian front. He went on leave to go home on 9 June 1918 and has to come back to the front on 8 July 1918. He was then found to be guilty of being drunk on 20 July 2918. He was de-mobed on 16 Feb 1919 in Wimbledon.
