Lives of the First World War

The large right hand panel bears the names of the 23 men of Little Gaddesden, Ringshall and Hudnall who gave their lives for their country during the First World War. Charles Batchelor's entry reads: "Charles Batchelor. Bedfordshire". The memorial was dedicated in 1921 and is located close to the northern end of the village green.

The Roll of Honour, which hangs in St Peter & St Paul's Church, Little Gaddesden and lists 119 names of those from Little Gaddesden, Ringshall and Hudnall who served in the 1914 – 1918 War. Men who have answered their country’s call in defence of a “Scrap of Paper”.

A Cross in Portland stone with bronze sword affixed, of the standard design by Sir Reginald Blomfield, located in the churchyard of St John the Baptist, Great Gaddesden. The names of the fallen are incised in the plinth with the inscription: In memory of the men of this place who fell in the Great War 1914 - 1918. One of those listed is Pte. C Batchelor, 6th Beds. Regt. Below is the inscription: let us give humble thanks to Almighty God for victory.

The Roll of Honour of the men of Great Gaddesden who fell in the Great War 1914-1918, which hangs on the wall of the side chapel and is headed: Roll of Honour/ Great Gaddesden Parish/ 1914 - 18. The names of the 18 men who fell, including Charles Batchelor, are then listed in two columns. below the names is the text: 'Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord & may light perpetual shine upon them'.

The 1914 15 Star (left) awarded to those who served in any theatre of war against Germany between 5th August 1914 and 31st December 1915, except those eligible for the 1914 Star. Those who were entitled to this medal were also entitled to the British War Medal (centre) and Allied Victory Medal (right).
