Grandfather's medals: On the left, the British War Medal (1914-20) awarded to 6,610,000 members of fighting forces who had to leave their native shore in the British Empire while on service. It is silver with depiction of St George on reverse. On the right, the Victory Medal (1914-1919) awarded to 5,725,000 soldiers who entered a theatre of war. It is bronze with words 'The Great War for Civilisation' on reverse. Both have his regiment and army number inscribed around the rim.

Certificate proving that my grandfather had been demobilized from the army and indicating that, should he be recalled to the army in an emergency, his place of re-joining would be Duddingston (Edinburgh). It also indicates that he was 'a first class shot'.

This is a certificate (Army Form Z18), which every soldier was given, to prove that they had been in the forces during the war. They were advised to give only copies to prospective employers. The certificate indicates that before joining the army, Hugh Dykes was employed as a brass finisher. The certificate also mentions that Hugh was with the 5th Reserve Battalion. However, he was also with the 6th Reserve Battalion at some point during the war.

This is page 2 of Army Form Z18. It mentions that Hugh was a good shot and displayed good conduct.
