Lives of the First World War

This memorial to George McArthur is in the old graveyard of the old Arngask Church (now ruined) in Glenfarg, near Perth, Scotland. He is also listed on the granite war memorial by the old Corbett Institute (then the village library, now a private house, recognisable by the small clock tower on it), along with 21 other village men killed in the first world war. What is described as 'the original cross' was made of tin (or zinc?) over a wooden core: whether or not this cross came from his original burial place in France is not clear. Some of the painted inscription can still be discerned on the cross. This image was taken in June/July 2006: since then the cross has broken down even more and very little of it remains (in 2014). Whilst his date of death is here shown as 21 December 1917, the CWGC list of (546) burials at Vadencourt British Cemetery shows his date of death as 23 December 1917.
