Name: THE GRESHAM, Vol. VI. DECEMBER 19th, 1914. No. 2

Title: Gresham's School Roll of Honour

Description: Cuthbert Frank Shaw, who was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, was killed in action near Ypres on October 30th. He entered the School in May, 1907, and left in July, 1910. In October, 1910, he entered as an engineering student at King's College, London, and on leaving, in July, 1913, he obtained the College Certificate of Engineering. In February, 1914, he passed the -Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Civil Engineers and after some months as an engineering assistant with Messrs. Kirkland & Capper of Westminster, he entered Woolwich Arsenal as an engineering pupil. Whilst at King's College he belonged to the College Company of the University of London O.T.C., and obtained his " B " Certificate, having previously gained the " A" while at School. In January, 1914, he joined the Special Reserve, Royal Sussex Regiment, and went to the front to join the 2nd Battalion of his regiment early in October. He was 22 years of age.

Title: BBC World War One at Home feature on Gresham's School

Description: More than 100 men who had been students at Gresham’s school in Holt fought and died in World War One. Their headteacher, George Howson, was devastated by the loss and died shortly after the armistice was signed. It is said his spirit was broken by war and that he died because of it. There was a flourishing officer training corps at the school and when they left school they joined up serving on land, sea and air. The Gresham’s boys joined the services as officers making them particularly vulnerable to snipers, who targeted the higher ranks. The Chapel at Greshams is used daily by pupils for prayer and school announcements. It is also used for large celebrations and commemorations by the wider community in Holt. School Governor and author of “When Heroes Die”, Sue Smart, explains why the Chapel is so important to the memory of the students who died.

Description: "2nd LIEUTENANT CUTHBERT FRANK SHAW, SPECIAL RESERVE attd. 2nd BATTN. ROYAL SUSSEX REGIMENT, who was killed in action on the 31st October, 1914, near Ypres, at the age of twenty-two, was the son of Frank H. Shaw, of The Gables, St. Leonards-on-Sea. He was a student of King’s College, London, where he was a very active figure in the social life of the college during his three years in the Engineering Department. During his last year he was Secretary of the Rifle Club, Editor of the Engineering Faculty’s section in the “College Review,” and General Sub-editor of the publication. On entering the College he joined the O.T.C., and eventually rose to the rank of Sergeant. Having obtained his “ A ” certificate while in the junior O.T.C. at Gresham School, he soon qualified for his “ B ” Certificate. He was gazetted to the Special Reserve of his regiment in January, 1914."
