Information at Graveside 'Banstead Remembers'Additional information see James Crouch’s research www.surreyinthegreatwar.org.uk/story/lance-corporal-fred-giles-died-28th-december-1914/ These are some of the points most of which I have verified (Ancestry/FindmyPast); Born New Headington, Oxon. 6 April 1875 one of at least 10 children of John & Mercy Ann, His father died in February 1901. 14 December 1891 Frederick enlisted into 4th Bn. Oxford Light Infantry (Militia). His address was New Marston, Oxford, he had lived there for 12 months & worked as a labourer. He upped his age by 1year. He was 5’6” 116lbs, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair. Chest 31.5” + 2”. On 10 February 1892 he elected to serve with the South Wales Borderers, Regular Army. He was then 124lbs, chest 33.5” + 1.5”. Served Home Feb-Dec 1892. Egypt Dec 1892 – Apr 1895. Gibraltar Apr 1895 – Nov 1897. India Nov 1897 – Mar 1902. S Africa Mar 1902 – Aug 1902. Home Aug 1902 – Feb 1904. He gained 3rd & 2nd Class Certificates of Education (Sep & Dec 1896) Cont'd ...Contributed by:
