    This is the oldest known photograph of the Conroys. It shows from left to right: Paul Conroy, Mary Conroy and James Conroy. It was taken circa 1906 after the death of Mary's husband Paul Conroy.

  • James Conroy
    This picture was most likely taken just before James went off to the Front. On the reverse, the postcard is addressed to James' mother. It also details James' rank, battalion and Company with the simple message "Last heard of 16th December". We don't know who sent it. It is assumed this postcard was in James' pack and was sent home by a pal after he was killed. I also assume James planned to write to his mother to say he had joined up (he ran away from home) but never had the chance.

    The message simply says "Last heard of 16th Dec. 1914" and has James' number, Company and Battalion. It is addressed to his mother. It is unknown who sent this but we assume it was a pal after the Battle of Givenchy, 22/12/1914.

    In the general area of the battle where James was killed the local farmer continues to find war detritus. Here you can see shell casings, shell cones, live bullets, a SRD rum ration bottle and a gas warning bell. He even uses bayonets to support the growth of his peas! This picture was taken in 2004.
