Private Albert McMahon (Service no. 2928) served with the Lewis Gun Section of the 2nd Battalion, The Lancashire Fusiliers, 12th Brigade, 4th Division. He was born in Wigan into a Roman Catholic family and later lived in Cadishead with his mother in one of Mrs Wright’s dwellings. Whilst living in Cadishead he had worked at the CWS Soap Works. Some time before the war Albert and his mother moved to Pendleton but still had friends in the district. He was unmarried and had worked as a general labourer at the British Westinghouse Company, Trafford Park, before enlisting in the Regular Army, c.1911. In 1911 he was serving as a private with the King’s (Liverpool Regiment), stationed at the Orford Barracks in Warrington. At some point he transferred to the Lancashire Fusiliers. He disembarked, with the battalion in France, on 22nd August 1914, and fought here until he was killed in action on Saturday, 19th February 1916, aged 24. He was originally buried in France at map reference - sheet 57d, square K32d.9.6. grave 84, and was later re-interred in the Sucrerie Military Cemetery at Colincamps, Somme, France. He is not listed on the Irlam and Cadishead War Memorial.
