Pte J H Mawson, 2/6th Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment

Pte J H Mawson, 2/6th Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment, missing presumed dead, Battle of Bullecourt, May 1917. 267183 Pte Joe Harry Mawson of Bradley, Yorkshire was the son of James Mawson, of 1, Chapel Terrace, Bradley, Keighley, Yorks, and the late Martha Ellen Mawson. Joe Harry Mawson served with the 2/6th Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment. He was born in 1884. The nominal roll of the 2/6th West Ridings included in 'Craven's Part in the Great War' indicates that Pte Mawson was in 'B' Company. He appears to have been a thoughtful comrade, the local Craven Herald recording a couple of letters written by him to the bereaved parents of fellow Bradley men. His own notice in the paper records the following words from his Captain: “Your son was a real good man and one who had an excellent influence in the Co. and will be much missed”, and from a friend: “He was such a cheerful fellow and always ready to help anybody. I think if there ever was a Christian your brother was one.” He was recorded as missing, believed killed on 3 May 1917, during the 62nd Division's attack on the Hindenburg Line at Bullecourt, in which the 2/6th West Ridings were held up on the German wire. He was aged 34. He was initially recorded as missing or a Prisoner of War and enquiries were put in hand via the Red Cross. Not having a known grave he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
